Jamie Rhodes

A Castle in England is an Eisner Award nominated graphic novel by Jamie Rhodes, published by Nobrow Press.
Funded by Arts Council England, in collaboration with the National Trust, Jamie Rhodes (Dead Men’s Teeth, 2014) spent three months as Writer-in-Residence at the National Trust’s Scotney Castle in Kent.

Jamie worked with the castle archivists to find unusual archive material around which to create 5 short graphic fiction scripts. The scripts were illustrated by experienced comic artists, and published by Nobrow Press in 2017.

Throughout the project Jamie was mentored by award winning graphic novelist, Karrie Fransman, and hosted several events and workshops. The book launched at a gallery exhibition of artwork created through the project, alongside the original historical items that inspired the stories, curated by Craig McCartney of Mr. Four Fingers art duo.

Reviews

WONDERFULLY WRITTEN & BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED

Love this book. The mix between fact & fiction is so well done. Gives you a real different perspective of Scotney Castle. The illustrations are really well done. Definitely recommend this book. As a member of National Trust I really hope they undertake a project like this with some of their other properties.

FUN COLLECTION

This is a great addition to my graphic novel collection. I love the binding and paper quality, and the art hangs together nicely when viewed as a whole. The five stories are illustrated by five different illustrators with contrasting effect. The images are printed in a duotone technique (red and dark brown ink) that accents the avant guard feel of most of the stories. It is put together with a lot of care, with an eye to small details such as fonts and endpapers.

QUIRKY & FUN & FILLED WITH HIDDEN GEMS

As an ex-history teacher, I'm thrilled to see people approaching historical topics in new and innovative ways. This book displays a respect for history and encourages interest in topics that are often difficult to teach.

I say 'bravo' to the six contributors and the National Trust for backing them.

NEAT & UNIQUE FOR QUITE A FEW REASONS

I really like this book. It goes quickly, as comics tend to, but there is some substance to this that you don't always get with graphic novels. I love that it has real historical context, and even more that it spells it out for you after each story so that you aren't left guessing what happened (sometimes you don't quite get the artwork in limited talking graphic novels, although that's not really a problem here anyway). It's also really a great bonus to have the stories all tied together at on place in history, helped even further with a few ongoing family trees. This is much more of a rewarding read than the average comic, and I like most of the artwork a lot as well.

Worth a read for anyone who has even a vague interest in English history.

A collaboration between writer Jamie Rhodes and the National Trust, this unique graphic novel plunges us into the rich and often dark history of Scotney Castle in Kent.

Recreating the castle’s past from the Medieval to the Edwardian ages, five rising stars from the UK comics scene (Isaac Lenkiewicz, Briony May Smith, William Exley, Becky Palmer and Isabel Greenberg) have illustrated five short stories that mix fiction with fact, creating a visually striking graphic collection that is steeped in historical context.
